When the sun is shining and the River Thames is calling, there's nothing better than a SUP adventure. If you're exploring further than usual, chances are you will encounter one of the Thames' many locks. These iconic landmarks are part of the river's charm, but they also come with very specific safety rules that every paddleboarder should know.
Here is your guide to navigating locks safely and respectfully so that you can keep your SUP journey smooth and hassle-free:
Always portage if possible. Paddleboarders are not allowed to pass through lock chambers with motorboats. Instead, use designated portage points to carry your board around the lock. It might feel like a detour, but it is the safest option.
Follow the signs. Every lock on the River Thames is a little different. Look out for the Environment Agency's portage signage to guide you along the correct route. These signs are there to keep the paddler out of danger and to make the process simple.
Be considerate around boats. Locks can be busy places, especially on sunny days when the river is full of cruisers, narrowboats, holidaymakers and rowers. Give boats plenty of room to manoeuvre. Wait until the area is clear before you cross slipways or walkways with your board.
Respect lock staff. If a Lock Keeper gives you instructions, follow them immediately. They know the flow of the river, the traffic coming through and hazards that you may not see.
Stay well clear of weirs. One of the biggest dangers near locks is the fast moving water around weirs. Always keep upstream until you are ready to portage. Avoid the temptation to drift close, strong currents can catch you off guard.
Locks make great photo stops. Many Thames locks are beautiful, perfect for a quick photo to remember your paddle. Just keep your board and kit tidy so you are not in the wqy of other river users.
Paddle safe & respect the river.
Exploring the River Thames by paddleboard is an unforgettable experience. By following these simple tips, you'll keep yourself and other river users safe.
