Discover how to stay safe, warm and confident paddleboarding on the Thames this Autumn & Winter. We share our cold weather SUP tips, equipment advice and essential safety checks.
Why paddleboarding out of season is so special
When summer fades, the River Thames transforms. Mist rises from the water, wildlife returns to the quieter stretches and every opportunity to paddle feels like an adventure. While cold water SUP can be breathtakingly beautiful, it does come with extra challenges, from icy water temperatures & less reliable river conditions to shorter daylight hours. Here's how to prepare so that you can keep enjoying this fantastic sport for as long as possible:
Always check river & weather conditions. Before heading out for a winter SUP session on the Thames, take a moment to check conditions. Look up flow & water levels via the Environment Agency. Monitor wind strength & direction via an app such as Windy or the Met Office. Avoid paddling in fog or poor visibility.
Dress for the water, not the weather. Plan for the worst case scenario - a dip in the Thames! Wetsuits can be restrictive and uncomfortable so consider wetsuit trousers, neoprene booties, gloves and a warm hat. If you plan to winter paddle frequently, you might want to invest in a drysuit for complete protection.
Plan for shorter days. With less daylight and chilly mornings & evening, you might not achieve your usual routes, set your expectations for shorter paddles with a promise to return to them in warmer months!
Prioritise safety on every paddle. Always wear a buoyancy aid or PFD. Use a quick release waist leash for river paddling. Let someone know your route and return time - better still - paddle with a friend. Experienced paddlers respect how powerful the river can be, and how quickly conditions can change at this time of year.
Warm up quickly after your paddle. Pack a dry bag with a towel and full change of clothes. A hot drink in a flask, snacks for quick energy.
Be river kind. Autumn & Winter are quieter times for wildlife on the Thames. Give birds plenty of space, minimise noise and enjoy natures calm at a respectful distance.
Know when to stay on land. Some days aren't safe to paddleboard, and that's OK.
If in doubt, don't go out.
