It's SUP Yoga season again and we're excited to be starting our regular sessions from June. We thought this would be a good time to share why we love the sport so much and just some of the many benefits of this wonderful watery activity!
Stand Up paddleboard yoga, or SUP Yoga, has captured the hearts of many as a refreshing blend of yoga and water sports. This innovative practice offers a unique way to connect with nature while boosting physical and mental well-being. As you float on the water, the gentle motions, combined with calming yoga techniques, create an experience that restores peace and balance. Let's explore the essence of SUP Yoga and the wealth of benefits it brings.
Firstly, what is SUP Yoga?
SUP Yoga is a creative form of yoga practiced on a stand-up paddleboard (SUP). Participants perform various yoga poses while balancing on the board. This setup enhances core strength, as maintaining balance is crucial. Additionally, the water environment encourages mindfulness and relaxation.
Classes are usually conducted in still settings like lakes, rivers, or quiet bays. Here, the soothing sounds of water help create a serene atmosphere. We are blessed at The Swan at Streatley with a tranquil, sheltered space on the River Thames with our SUP yoga platform anchored just off a private island. Each session begins with a short introduction to paddleboarding techniques. This ensures all participants feel comfortable and confident on their boards before paddling round to the yoga practice.
There are many physical benefits of SUP Yoga
Enhanced Balance and Stability
Practicing yoga on a paddleboard requires a heightened focus on balance, which is often greater than in traditional mat yoga. Each pose works the core muscles, leading to significant improvements in stability over time. This newfound balance can also enhance performance in daily activities, reducing the likelihood of falls or injuries.
Increased Flexibility
As with traditional Yoga, practising on a SUP board significantly boosts flexibility. The yoga practice is adapted for the board and as you explore different poses, you will often experience deeper stretches, thanks to the board's resistance.
Muscle Strengthening
The requirement to engage stabilizing muscles during SUP Yoga leads to comprehensive muscle toning throughout the body. For instance, poses like Plank and Boat strengthen the core, while sequences like Warrior I and II target the legs and arms. As these muscles grow stronger, they promote better posture, essential for overall health.

Mental Health Benefits of SUP Yoga
Stress Relief
The combination of water and yoga creates a natural remedy for stress. The gentle, rhythmic motion of the water encourages relaxation. Studies indicate that being near water can lower cortisol levels by up to 20%, substantially reducing feelings of anxiety. This holistic approach nurtures the body and mind, helping practitioners cultivate peace during their sessions.
Mindfulness and Connection to Nature
SUP Yoga promotes mindfulness through increased awareness of your surroundings. floating on a board in the river, away from your phone, laptop and other distractions provides the ultimate 'off grid' hour. You will find that you tune into your breath, and become more aware of the sights and sounds of the river, a cooling breeze or the warmth of the sun. This refreshing connection fosters a deep appreciation for the present moment, making it easier to manage stress and anxiety.
Improved Mental Clarity
Regular engagement in SUP Yoga can boost cognitive function. The meditative aspects combined with the calming environment help clear distractions. Participants often experience improved focus and better decision-making skills. This clarity can contribute to higher productivity in professional and personal challenges —extending beyond the yoga board.
Community & Social
